Jersey City is made up of people from all walks of life, and there’s always been a strong sense of community within the people who reside in the area. During the past couple of decades, we’ve seen Jersey City change and the attention has shifted. What was once a city outsiders often feared suddenly became an “up and coming” area, starting with developments in Downtown and currently working its way into the adjacent neighborhoods.

Jersey City is filled with families who have lived here for generations along with residents who decided to move here within the past five years. We’ve seen residents who’ve lived here for decades be pushed out of their homes due to taxes, and we’ve seen residents who refer to the area as the “sixth borough.” The difference in opinions and experiences across the board allow for an open discussion to take place.

With the change in population and changes in the city, we decided to ask Jersey City residents about their perspective of Jersey City – their memories, their opinions on the changes, and what changes they would propose if given the authority.

Our first “JC Local” is Sunjay, a young resident of Jersey City who’s lived here his whole life. We met him at his Suburbia Court home to briefly talk about his experience and thoughts on Jersey City.
