Waxing, we all do it but no one really talks about it. It’s one of those things that people are embarrassed to admit that they do, well here I am, my name is Lynn and I wax religiously… So there! #noshame #nohair

I’ve been going to The European wax center for almost 3 years now after a very bad experience at a random nail salon in Manhattan. I was actually 39 weeks pregnant with mini-chicpea and decided I should “prep” myself for the big day by getting waxed (yes I am crazy, but we all knew that). Anyway, I heard really great things about the European Wax Center so I decided to give it a try, and I have been going pretty much every month since. I absolutely love them, their waxers are extremely skilled and professional, they make something that could be so incredibly painful really quick and easy. Think about it, all they do is wax, they don’t do nails, massages, facials, they are focused on hair removal and that’s it. So obviously they are going to be the best at what they do!

Now, the summer is here which also means bikini waxing season, so I thought it would be fun to interview the awesome team behind The European Wax center while I was being “serviced” and get the background story on this local business  (this was much harder than I thought)

What’s your name? Nyashia Rodriguez

How long have you been a Waxer? Two years and a few months.

What do you like about it? It’s just so easy, after you do it so many times, and you meet a lot of different people.

What are usually some people’s reactions when they get waxed? Laughing and “Ow,” or they look at themselves in mirror for a long time and I’m like “You have to get dressed.”

What do you mean by they look at themselves in the mirror? They make sure it’s completely off, they’re like “This looks good, this is nice.”

Hahaha. Well is it off?! 

What are your names? Fritzi and Dara.

What do you guys do here? 

Fritzi: I’m a Wax Specialist.

Dara: I’m a GSA

What’s a GSA? 

Dara: I’m a Guest Service Associate and one of the owners of European Wax Center, Jersey City

How did you get into this business? 

Dara: From the most horrible waxing experience in New York City.

Can you tell me about that? 

Dara: It was filthy, it was disgusting, double dipping, [and] it was terrible. I’m thinking about it now, seven to nine years ago. I was going to this Russian woman and she was like “Okay, hurry up, I have no time!” And girls would just stand in the hallway [like] you were at a hair salon. You would go upstairs, she would barely change the paper, never disinfected the bed, and ten sticks would sit in the cup,

How long has the Jersey City location been open? Four years.

Can you tell me specifically what your services are and how it’s different from going to another salon? 

Dara: It’s more comfortable and we are experts in waxing and just want to reveal your beautiful skin

Fritzi: We just specialize in waxing, it’s all we do. We don’t do massages, this is literally just specialized in making the skin [beautiful].

Can you tell me what you use? Other places usually use strips: 

Fritzi: So we’re a strip-less wax, it’s 100% bees wax.

Dara: It’s hard wax.

Fritzi: It dries quicker and our wax is specifically made for us. So we’re the only ones in the world with this wax, it’s only made for the European Wax Center (EWC). It’s made to make your waxing last longer and be less painful.

What’s the four-step process for prepping? 

Fritzi: Cleanse, protect, wax, and rejuvenate.

What do you do in the four-step process? 

Fritzi: Our first step is pre-wax cleanser it removes lotion, oil, anything that really that will prevent the quality wax to take place. Our oil, it creates a protective barrier to the skin and the wax to make sure the wax adheres to your hair and not your skin. And again, our exclusive comfort wax, it’s alcohol free and our last step is to use the ingrown hair serum to prevent any bumps, breakouts, and ingrown hairs. And you want to use that twice a day every day. It has tea tree oil…

Nyashia: Lavender, glycolic acid, exfoliates.

Fritzi: It helps your waxing last longer.

Dara: If you use our products in conjunction with our waxing then the density and the thickness of your hair changes. All of our products are film-free and alcohol-free, so nothing clogs your pours…. They are Paraben-free.

How do you stay on top of your game with new Laser centers popping up? 

Nyashia: The hair still grows back, they still got’ta to come back and get waxed.

Fritzy: I do get a lot of people who do get laser, they just have less hair, but it’s still there.

Can you tell me about the company culture? 

Dara: We look for people who are passionate, we look for people who could be part of our family, [and] love what they do. I think for the most part, we have fifteen women, they all genuinely care about each other, they get the EWC model, they work a six-hour shift and they really love what they do. It’s the passion, it’s their chemistry, [and] we really are just one big happy family.

Dara: There’s something to me that sets us apart from a lot of other people. I hear “Oh, I go to the salon down the street.” Okay, go, but, that’s not their specialty. You go to a hair salon because they’re good at hair, you go to a manicure salon because you like how that person does your nails.

Dara: People are very structured, they want their schedule, four weeks, same time, they don’t budge. It’s a beautiful thing.

Do you have any favorite Jersey City hangout spot? 

Nyashia: I love the sandwich shop.

Fritzi: I love my job. The Taqueria place.

You guys do service men too, right? 

Dara: We do, do men, yeah.

But there are certain things you won’t right? 

Dara: Men’s Brazilian’s. It’s not legal for European Wax Center. Jersey City is a huge population for waxing. I mean when we first opened we used to literally get a phone call a day for [a] men’s Brazilian. We do a good percentage of men services!

Anything else you want people to know about European Wax Center? 

Dara: Come in, give us a try, [and] don’t believe what other people say. The first trial is free, for our first time guests, as long as you’re a New Jersey State Resident. [Women] can get a complimentary eyebrow, underarm, [or] bikini line… men can get a free ears, nose, or eyebrow (waxing). It’s good at all locations.

Walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended, our “Refer-A-Friend” program is huge—every friend you refer, you get $5—and every time you pre-book before you leave the store you get $1 in your account. So if you wax every four weeks, you’ll earn $12 free.
