If you read the post about stylish family and owners of Another Man’s Treasure the Franz’s you know already that the store actually started in the location where they currently have their showroom on Brunswick street in Downtown Jersey city. Going to the store on Grove is an experience, however going to the showroom is like going on a vintage adventure. Meika and I spent the day there playing dress up, wearing outfits from the early teens to the 70’s; one of a kind pieces I would never dream of being able to wear.
What are we wearing? It’s like the shining twins. We are both wearing 1930’s silk velvet dresses. I have a 1930’s woven straw hat…we are both wearing 1930’s shoes.
I think I need that dress. I think we both kind of need those for the winter.
Can you tell me about the era of the clothes we are wearing? In the 30’s fashion starts to get more fitted again, the war also started. Women started to get into the work force so it becomes more about being utilitarian… comfortable shoes so women could work…suits also became fashionable…
What is the difference between your showroom and the store? The showroom is where we keep our higher end, and more fragile pieces, including rare designer, couture, gowns and early items like Victorian through 1940’s, as some of these pieces are too fragile for the shop racks. Another part of our business is selling to the fashion industry for inspiration, so we also have items that are exceptional in design but not necessarily condition. This can be anything from a print to a detail on a dress that they like and want to have remade.
You have a vintage show too once a year? Yes. We do the Manhattan vintage clothing show which is 3 times a year and this year we we will also be doing the pier show. Here we sell to a mix of people such as vintage collectors, New York fashionistas, fashion designers, such as Anna Sui, Betsy Johnson, Ralph Lauren etc.. You also get a lot of designers and stylist pulling for specifics such as film and tv… it’s really mixed… and then just people who love vintage! Anybody can go. And It’s such a great show to go to, even if you don’t buy anything its like going to a museum but you can touch and try things on! You have to go!
How do you determine what to put in the shop as opposed to the showroom? I don’t put anything too fragile or delicate in the shop unless it can be hung high or out of people’s reach. We also tend to keep our higher priced items in the showroom as we have found most of our shop customers are looking for more everyday affordable vintage.
I just had to put my vintage show pieces aside because I am competing with 90 other dealers and if I don’t bring my best stuff I am not going to do well. Its also a really important part of being in the industry for us and getting our name out there.
How do people know about the showroom? Most people find out about it through our shop or website and if they want to make an appointment, they can call or email us.
Tell me about this coat. It is 1920’s velvet with fur trim
Sorry PETA… I know..I don’t condone buying fur however I think it’s better to encourage people who do to buy vintage fur instead of buying it new.
What’s happening here for JC Fridays? This Friday we are having a Brunswick Street Block Party with fellow businesses Iris Records & Modcup coffee roasters. From 5-9 we will be debuting our “Mods & Rockers” themed FALL/WINTER lookbook photo series photographed by the talented Sumner Dilworth and shot in neighboring businesses Iris Records & Modcup. Also a great opportunity to check out the showroom without an appointment!
