A few weeks after starting Chicpeajc, a former co-worker sent me a flyer to a Cash and Cream event at The Dopeness. I was unable to attend but immediately checked out their website. I absolutely adored their clothes! Cash and Cream is edgy, fierce and sexy and they have amazing pieces that would look good on most, if not all women…especially those who have curves they want to accentuate. I totally see celebs like Rihanna, Nicky Minaj and Iggy Azalea rocking these pieces! I reached out to the girls and they invited me over to meet them, hear their story and of course try on some of the dope outfits they designed and created. Did I mention how stunning and stylish these girls are? #babes
What are your names? Vicky and Tina.
Can you tell me how Cash and Cream started? (Vicky) It started with us doing shorts, we used to take Vintage shorts and dye them, add embellishments…that is kind of how we started…
Do you have a fashion design background? (Tina) She does… she graduated from FIT. I went to school in Georgia in fashion for a little while, but I studied fashion marketing. It’s always been an interest of ours and we just started in our backyard….we would find Levi’s jeans, cut them up… like the one she has on now. So we started off with those…and started selling them because girls would ask us about them.
You guys work out of here? (Tina) We both work out of our homes…we had sewing machines for a year and decided we needed to learn to sew and we taught ourselves… with time we got better and better at it.
How long have you guys been doing this? (Tina) Sewing? Probably only a year. As far as the DIY stuff about 3 years. We would make earrings, tie dye a bunch of stuff…then we just decided to go bigger with it.
How do you guys know each other? (Vicky) High school, we were girlfriends.
The fabric you use is extremely flattering… (Tina) We use a lot of spandex…we try to use fabrics that feel nice… we spend alot of time in fabric stores and we look for things that would be flattering to most body figures… and we love colors and prints that are very eye catching.
Do you have the same style? (Vicky) We like the same things but we we dress differently.
How would you guys define your own personal style? (Tina) I am very tacky haha…That’s how I would describe my style. I wear things and sometimes I am like “why am I wearing this?” haha. We have a lot of similarities but we where we differ, is interesting because its a nice little mix. She’s more girly than I am am. (Vicky) We both bring something to the table for everyone… I prefer tighter things and she likes looser outfits, but she comes up with the more intricate details of our clothing.
Do you ever fight or argue? I am looking for some drama here! haha. (Vicky) Once in a while, but barely. (Tina) We are usually on the same page. Sometimes if we have a small disagreement we will just talk it out.
Where do you sell your stuff? (Vicky) We sell it on our website, cashandcream.com for now.
Is this your full time job? (Tina) This is our main focus but we both have part time jobs. We plan on spending more time on it as it expands…
What are your future plans for Cash and Cream? (Vicky) We are going to try and get a showroom and do some collabs with people. We know a couple of girls that want to do some projects with us so we want to expand and see what else we can come up with. (Tina) Maybe some pop up shops…more events.
Do you want to open your own store? (Tina) We definitely want to open a store. We would love to open a boutique, maybe even a nail salon… I went to cosmetology school and Vicky went to school for nails so we both have a background in beauty.
Why cash and cream? (Vicky) It just popped up one day….It seemed pretty catchy, its girly….
Are you both from Jersey City? (Tina) Yeah pretty much born and raised here…
What are your favorite hangout spots? (Tina) I spend alot of time downtown…. I like L.I.T.M, I go to Lucky’s sometimes… (Vicky) We also like Iron Monkey. We don’t really like clubs, we like to day drink!
Anything else you want people to know about Cash and Cream? (Vicky) I think alot of people don’t realize we make everything by ourselves. We do all our orders…everything is in house.
When people order online is it custom made? Yes, everything is made to order. We do custom orders, girls will email us with pictures of dresses they want…we take their measurements and everything.
Good to know. Ok. Let’s try shit on…
