My name is Merica Kahn, and I am the new pet contributor for ChicpeaJC! I moved to Jersey City the day before Thanksgiving 2015. I fell in love with the community and energy of this beautiful place. I currently work full time in the garment district of NYC, and I am launching an eco-friendly knitwear line for women in 2017. I have always been an animal lover and think having a pet is such an amazing experience. I own a toy poodle named Nicky, who is my everything! I love having the opportunity to write about local pets in the area and events that can help support our furry friends.
On Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting two pet residents of Jersey City and their owner, Eileen! They had a lot to say…
How old are you in human years?
Bentley: I am about five years old now but just celebrated my 2nd-year adoptaversary. My sister Meatball and I got to celebrate together. That was a fun day!
Meatball: I’m just about eight years old. I can be spunky for my age, though! We just celebrated my brother’s 2nd-year adoptaversary, and I can’t wait for my 1st-year adoptaversary. Hopefully, I get to wear my pink party hat again!
What kind of Breed are you both?
Bentley: Possible Yorkie mix, but we’re not 100% sure.
Meatball: I’m a Brussels Griffin! So cute, I know. Mwah!

What is your rescue story?
Bentley: I was adopted in October of 2014 from the Liberty Humane Society. (http://www.libertyhumane.org/) My mommy was browsing for adoptable dogs on Petfinder and saw I was in the area. She filled out an application online, and Liberty Humane called back the very same day! Mommy and Daddy wanted me as soon as I jumped into my daddy’s lap. It was a big adjustment going to a new place, but I became so comfortable in my new forever home. It was the happiest day of my life.
Meatball: Mommy and daddy adopted me just last February of 2016 at Pup Starz Rescue in New York City. (http://www.pupstarzrescue.org/) I am originally from Tennessee, but my previous owner no longer had time to care for me. I was brought to New York with other adoptees and my soon to be mommy human was going to foster me for just a week, but she fell madly in love with me. I also fit in perfectly with my brother, Bentley. It was meant to be. I had all my shots; I was spayed and so excited to be in Jersey City. I got so lucky they kept me. I love my new family!
How did you two get your adorable names?
Bentley: I was named Bentley while I was already at Liberty Humane Society. My mommy loved the name, so I got to keep it. All the ladies think it’s cool.
Meatball: My name used to be Cindy, but that just wasn’t cute enough for me. Mommy thought I should have a name that better suited my personality. After about a week of name hunting, we came across Meatball! My tail also looked like a Meatball, so it’s been my name ever since. I couldn’t be happier with it!
Do you have any siblings? (Foster or biological?)
Bentley: Meatball and I have each other, and that’s all that matters. We are complete opposites but are very close. I love having a sister.
Do you have favorite activities you prefer?
Bentley: If I could only pick one activity for the rest of my life it would be to play with my rubber chicken. It is my absolute favorite toy. Hiking is a passion of mine when we can get away from the city.
Meatball: I’m a foodie, hence the name Meatball. Just give me some treats or bones, and I’ll be happy as ever!
Worst trouble you’ve been in
Bentley: I’m a regular, old fashioned ‘good boy.’ I hear it all the time.
Meatball: I’m a bit more of a trouble maker. If there is any food left out, I’m going to find it! Other than that, I am very well behaved. I just can’t help myself around a yummy treat!
What are your funniest traits?
Bentley: I love to ‘breakdance’ when I’m excited. When mommy and daddy come home, I jump up on the couch next to them and roll on my back, sideways, and all around! It looks like I’m dancing and mommy loves that.
Meatball: When I’m about to go for a walk, and it’s time to put my harness on I always roll on my back. Maybe you could say I’m a LITTLE lazy.
Is there anything you’re afraid of?
Bentley: I’m the family security detail and very protective. Although, if the handheld dust buster comes around, you bet I am running faster than Meatball could eat a treat!
Meatball: I don’t like loud noises. I’m from Tennessee, so it was a big change becoming a city dog. Luckily, Bentley likes to protect me. Just keep me away from the fireworks and we’re all good.
Living in a beautiful place like Jersey City you must have some spots you like to visit most! Where are they?
Bentley: We love walking around the perimeter of any parks in Jersey City. Hamilton Park is especially nice.
Meatball: Our favorite outing is Morris Canal Park. It’s right along the water behind the Colgate clock. We can roam free, and it’s so fun to run around and meet other Jersey City doggies.
Do you have any talents/tricks you would like your fans to know about?
Bentley: The ‘half roll’ is my specialty.
Meatball: I can sniff food out like a super dog. My mom says my nose holds super powers.
Do you have any advice for those in Jersey City looking for new ‘non-human’ members of the family?
Bentley: Adopt don’t shop! There are so many dogs out there looking for homes. You can help rescue dogs in need and change their lives for the better.
Meatball: There are puppies for adoption if you’re looking for a young dog! Many people don’t know that. Older dogs are special too! Just like me, you can find a dog that is already spayed/neutered and potty trained. No matter how old or young, we all need love.
We love our Mommy!
