This February, we’re dedicating our Pets of JC column to our furry felines! These beloved housepets are oftentimes overshadowed by their dog friends and very misunderstood. In order to shed light on these lovable creatures with big personalities, we took to Instagram and asked our residents to nominate their favorite cat for our very first “Cats of JC” column! Check out these 6 cats who love to strut their stuff in Jersey City.

Augusten (Gus)

Your Favorite Thing About Your Cat?

Gus is a 3 year old domestic shorthaired cat. He’s incredibly social. He’ll come out and mingle when we have guests over and beg for pets. Even people who claim “I’m not a cat person” still love him.

Anything Difficult With Your Cat?

He can be very needy. Since I work from home, he’s often disrupted video conference calls. Thankfully no one seems to mind! But also because he’s so social, I often feel bad when we’re traveling and leave him at home. When our friends are around, we have them check in on him as often as possible just to keep him company. When they’re not, we ask Tails on Trails to look after him.

What Makes Your Cat Special?

He’s quite a talker. He makes noises when you pet him, when you talk to him, when he jumps, even when you just look at him.

Anything Else You’d Like Our Residents to Know?

Gus sort of just fell into our laps when a friend’s elderly neighbor fell ill and could no longer take care of him and his sister. We had talked about getting a cat, but weren’t actively looking until we met him. Two years later and I honestly can’t imagine life without him!

Your Favorite Thing About Your Cat?

Gordon is a 9 Year Old domestic longhaired cat. Gordon does not act like a true cat. He follows myself and my fiance around, wants love and affection all the time, comes when he’s called. So if I really had to narrow it down, he is the most loving creature on this planet.

Anything Difficult With Your Cat?

Seriously, and I mean this, no. He’s such a love, I actually don’t have a bad word to say about him. He’s that amazing.

What Makes Your Cat Special?

He acts like a dog. Comes when he’s called, gives kisses on your hand, wants attention and love all the time, loves a belly rub, sleeps everyday right by my fiance’s and my faces.

Anything Else You’d Like Our Residents to Know?

Honestly, I have never met a single cat like Gordon. He is so loving, so sweet, so balanced, that it’s hard to believe he was a rescue cat who was found in a bush in the middle of a snowstorm. He’s just amazing. I’m grateful he came into my life!

Your Favorite Thing About Your Cat?

Littles is a ten year old Tabby cat! Littles has such an easy going personality and loves hanging out on the couch with us. He’s a big goofball too and makes us laugh all the time.

Anything Difficult With Your Cat?

He tends to throw up if you don’t warm up his wet food 😹

What Makes Your Cat Special?

Appearance wise he has white socks and boots and a swirly marble pattern. Behavior wise he does this thing where he’ll start grooming himself then kicking himself in the face (as seen here) – cracks us up every time. He’s truly a very special crayon.

Anything Else You’d Like Our Residents to Know?

Littles started out as a foster cat and we’ve couldn’t have been happier to have found him! I encourage everyone to adopt their furbabies 🐱

Billy

Your Favorite Thing About Your Cat?

Billy is 5 year old domestic short hair. I can’t really think of just one thing, because I love everything about him. He is honestly just so purrfect! If I had to choose, I think my favorite thing is how he is super responsive to everything I say to him. If I ask him for cuddles he runs to me immediately and lays his head on my chest & purrs.

Anything Difficult With Your Cat?

I think the only difficult thing is how jealous he could be when his sister is getting all the attention.

What Makes Your Cat Special?

Billy has great people judgement, he’s selective with who he allows in his space. He has also been known to “act like a dog”. He wags his tail when he’s happy & loves to play fetch with absolutely anything that resembles a stick.

Anything Else You’d Like Our Residents to Know?

Cats are amazing beings! A lot of people tend to think cats are all generally mean and stand-offish but as a cat mom & pet sitter, I’ve met so many cats and they all have different personalities. I think I got pretty lucky with my two rescues. They are both so lovable and sweet. I also think they have thrived so well because I’ve always communicated and interacted with them since they were kittens. I encourage anyone out there reading this to please consider adopting a cat, it’ll be worth it!

Your Favorite Thing About Your Cat?

Gardiner is a 6 year old charmer! He’s very snuggly.

Anything Difficult With Your Cat?

His preferred breakfast time seems to be half an hour before whatever time my alarm is set for!

What Makes Your Cat Special?

He’s super friendly. He greets me and everyone else at the door to my apartment and will cuddle with anyone!

Anything Else You’d Like Our Residents to Know?

I adopted Gardiner at age 6 when his former owner couldn’t keep him any more due to allergies. When he dropped Gardiner off he told me “This cat needs a lot of love.”  That is absolutely true and I’m happy to give it!

Alfonzo is a 10 year old rescued Persian cat. My favorite thing is his purrfect personality.
