We have a two for one deal with these next stylish peeps. Sister and brother, Shamecca & Athanasius Ajavon met with me on an extremely cold January day and still effortlessly rocked their outfits. What I loved about these two was the appreciation they had for one another, something that seems to be lacking in most sibling relationships. What’s your name & how old are you?
My name is Athanasius H. Ajavon Jr. Athanasius means immortality. Everyone usually just calls me AJ because it’s much easier. I’m 20 years old, born in ’96. My 21st birthday is April 1st this year.
What are you wearing?
I’m wearing a brown and tan dashiki with my gold African chain, both given to me by my father. Also denim overalls I found at a local thrift store in Jersey City and army surplus boots. Me and sister’s inspiration for this shoot was to show off our culture while still remaining hip with the styles today. Our father was raised in Liberia, West Africa.
Who/What inspires your style?
I find most of my inspiration to come from 90’s tv shows and sitcoms. The Fresh Prince of Bel-air, Seinfeld, Martin, In Living Color, etc. Each character had a unique style and wardrobe that I like to emulate and incorporate into our style today in this generation. I also look to my sister as a role model, she’s been a big part for why i like to pursue being a model and to always remain being myself.
How long have you lived in Jersey City?
Ive been living here for a short time only 3 months so far. I’m enjoying myself, I tried an amazing gingerbread cupcake at a bakery on Grove Street a couple days ago. I also like how close it is to New York City but not directly in the city, there’s space in-between.
What is your favorite Jersey City spot?
I’d have to say Grove Street is winning so far as my favorite spot. There’s beautiful paintings and graffiti all over its hard not to get inspired for a photoshoot. My favorite is a painting of a huge wave with the Statue of Liberty in the backdrop. Me and my sister are planning a bike ride around the city soon so that’ll give me a chance to find more amazing spots.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
Do what makes you happy first. Don’t lose focus on what you had planned for yourself when you were in your room thinking to yourself on how you can impact the world in a positive light.
