If you have been following ChicpeaJC since the beginning, you know that we were all about stylish peeps living in Jersey City.
Guess what!? We’re bringing it back, and we’re so excited to be featuring so many amazing individuals in the Hudson County area.
Our first stylish peep is Liz Black, a plus size fashion savvy chick!
What’s your name & how old are you?
Liz Black, and I’m 32.
What are you wearing?
I’m wearing a faux leather jacket from Simply Be that I painted and studded, a Kenzo x H&M men’s T-shirt, Jordyn Woods x boohoo sequin pants, a Vajazzled Pussy Pouch clutch from DAMNsel, an uber-cheap pearl choker, and Aldo ankle boots.
Who/what inspires your style?
I feel that my style is very eclectic – I dress based on mood, and sometimes on activity. I’ve been attending NYFW for over eight years, and I get a lot of my inspiration from that, both on and off the runway. The people who attend (or just mill around outside) always have a unique sense of style and will often layer things or pair items that I may have not considered. Also, being plus size makes dressing more challenging, in that I have way less options to choose from, so it forces me to be more creative when pulling together a look.
How long have you lived in Jersey City?
Off-and-on for the last eight years. We tried Hoboken life and attempted to do the suburbs, but Jersey City felt like home. We moved back here about three years ago, and I wish we had never left.
And your favorite Jersey City spot?
Very challenging, because there are so many places downtown that I love. Raval’s happy hour is so worth it, and we try to stop in at least once a week. LITM is my go-to bar; I love their creative drinks and the rotating art (some day I will have my paintings on their walls). Archer is a great spot for a fancy-schmancy drink and some unique charcuterie. For my birthday this year a group of us went to the new Wurstbar – they have delicious wursts, fries, AND they have wine on tap! And for a fun spot that everyone can enjoy – Barcade. What’s better than playing The Simpsons or a driving game while having a draft cider?
What is one piece of advice that you’d give to your younger self?
Your worth cannot be defined by any number. Stop focusing on what a scale or clothing tag says, stop waiting until you lose weight to wear the things you love, stop living in fear of judgment. Someday, you will – truly – love yourself as you are and you will realize your body is a blessing, not a burden.
