A little over a week ago, I was tinkering on Instagram and saw an influx of “likes” from someone nicknamed the.grey. Naturally, I was curious and checked her out. “the.grey” is a really successful fashion blogger with the most incredible style. I immediately developed a girl crush. Then I found out she actually lives in Jersey City! I ran into her at the Eighty Mag magazine launch party recently and asked her to be my next stylish peep.
We met at Tea NJ for some delicious drinks and ended up spending the afternoon together getting to know each other…. This day reminded me of why I started ChicpeaJC in the first place; to make connections with beautiful souls like Jeanne. After our time was over we decided to meet again the following day to do what we do best; dress up and have fun. #girlboss
Ok, first thing I need to know is how the hell did you find me? My boyfriend found your blog actually! At the time I was looking for people to invite to the Gypsy Warrior event I was hosting in Hoboken and then I saw you where from Jersey City so I liked all your pics to get your attention haha.
How did you start? I’ve actually only been blogging since April. What happened was I started working with a social media marketing company and they send me brands to work with. I get to choose the clothes and then post them on my blog…. But I’ve been on Instagram for much longer.
Did you start on Instagram? Actually, I started on Tumblr. Then someone made a fake Instagram account… This person was posting my Tumblr photos! So my goal was to get more followers than this fake account. It had like 2000! I started posting…. I was also paying more attention to what I was posting… so yeah that’s how it all started.
So now you work with different brands and they pay you to get dressed. Pretty much.
I hate you. Haha It’s fun. If it’s a small company and they come to me directly then I don’t ask for any sort of payment. We are all trying to start something and if I love the product I will do it!
How would you define your style? I stalked your Instagram and you used to have long hair! I had really long hair and then I cut it all off. I used to do modeling and then I just didn’t see myself doing that type of modeling…I started doing what I really love to do; I love fashion and it turns out people love that more than skimpy outfits.
How often do you post? There isn’t a schedule when I am doing my own looks, but when it’s from the marketing company I get a weekly schedule and I have to post at a certain time and certain day of the week… they check the stats on how much traffic I am getting on the post…because that brand needs to know if they are getting their money’s worth. It’s pretty crazy… Can you imagine making money out of social media?
It’s insane. It’s a new a business.
Who takes your picture everyday? My boyfriend! and people are always wondering what camera I use. We just use the iPhone!
What do you like to wear on a typical day when you aren’t shooting? I am pretty laid back, I like to wear white. I don’t wear heels unless I am shooting or at an event… I like to be comfortable.
What are you wearing? This shirt is actually Forever 21. It was in the plus sized section and I just took it in. It was the last one so I had to make it work! These jeans are from Seven. They were sent to me by the company that I work for… they are so big and the zipper just broke this morning haha… I make it work. These shoes are 10 dollars. I don’t believe in branding actually…If it looks good who cares who makes it?
Agreed. I don’t really do name brands either. Are you from Jersey City? I just moved here last August. I lived with a friend who was a photographer for 9 months and then I found my appartment so I live on my own now. Living in Jersey City makes it easier to get anywhere… I work in the city and I like going to Hoboken.
What’s your favorite hangout spot? I never leave my apartment haha. I like going downtown… I like the Thai place Sawadee on Grove. I go to Bubble alot by Newport, it’s a bubble tea spot. Typical Asian… haha.
Since you are successful blogger what kind of advice can you give me? Collaborations, networking… Definetly stay down to earth. A lot of bloggers when they reach a certain level they are like “Don’t collaborate with anyone below 10k, I am telling you this to protect your image….” Like why would you?!
Really? Yup. You would be surprised. It’s crazy…. I don’t care, if you have great style I will collaborate with you… I think we should collaborate!
I would love to! So yeah, collaborations are fun… The more interaction the better and don’t shut anyone out. Because if you do, you might be missing out on a great opportunity.
That is great advice.
