My name is Lynn and I am extremely high-maintenance. I came to this conclusion two weeks into the quarantine when my acrylic nails started growing out, my grey hairs emerged to reveal my true age, my eye-brows developed their own identity and so did my bikini line. There’s more but I will leave that here.
3 months in quarantine really put the amount of work we put into our self-care into perspective. It was rough the first month, but afterwards I sort of embraced it. Developed my own self-care routine and enjoyed my natural self. It’s cool, I feel good. But I am ready for a fucking haircut and pedicure.
I am mostly excited for all our small businesses re-opening today; the hair salons, nail shops, spa’s, barbershops, massage/wellness spots, tattoo shops. Restaurants have been able to stay open for the most part and sort of cover their asses. but our personal care shops have been hit so bad because of COVID. It’s hard as it is to run a small business; paying rent, employees, expenses etc. Imagine having to close for 3 months. Your blood, sweat and tears, years of hard work lay dormant.
And today, they get to re-open.
But, with so many procedures and guidelines it’s not going to be easy. I made a hair appointment at The Hair Room and a nail appointment with my girl Maria in Bayonne and they both sent me pages of consent forms, rules and guidelines. It was like I had to study for some test. I can’t even imagine how stressful this must be. So before we get into the info, please be kind when you are getting a service done, please be patient and flexible. Wear your fucking mask.

As New Jersey pushes through Phase 2 of the reopening process, we’re seeing more of our favorite local spots open their doors. Personal care facilities in New Jersey are permitted to reopen starting June 22nd, but there’ll be new processes in place.
Procedures to expect
New Jersey released a set of standards for personal care businesses to follow, including:
- Appointment-only services
- Health screenings on clients and staff, including temperature checks
- Face coverings in use at all times, unless face down on a massage table
- Six-feet distance between others
- Clients waiting in cars or away from facility if the waiting area doesn’t accommodate social distancing
- Enhancing cleaning and disinfection practices
