It’s the season where we all look at the holiday damage we’ve done and set out to get our thuches (asses in yiddish) to the gym. Now I am not agains NYE resolutions, because it’s a nice feeling to start fresh, but I also dont think people need to wait till a calendar date to change to better themselves. The key to sticking to a fitness journey is finding a class or gym you like and enjoy, so you actually look forward to exercising and end up getting hooked.
A few months ago I launched the first FitPea class review and have been having a blast trying new classes, this has helped me get out of my comfort zone and some of these classes were humbling AF.
So every month (or so) I will be reviewing different types of classes, I will be sharing easy at-home workouts you can do with little to no equipment and I’ll be working out with local fit people to get their tips and tricks. Sharing diet tips and recipes etc… It should be be a good time. I’m happy to hear feedback and suggestions!
Let’s get to it, shall we?
I will be using various categories:
- Who/What/Where
- Vomit level –This will be an indication at how challenging the class was.
- Suitable for …
- What to wear/What to bring – no one likes showing up to a class unprepared
- Codes/Discounts
ToneHouse
My trainer, Andrew Solomon (also known as The Everything Bagel) took me last year to ToneHouse. He’s a fanatic and upon hearing him rant and rave about how hard and challenging it was, I said to him “look at me, how hard can it be?” I am always up for a challenge and figured what’s the worst that can happen?
I fucked up and within 10 minutes of going, regretted my decision.
Who?
“Tone House® is the first-ever extreme, athletic-based group fitness studio aimed at unleashing the inner athlete in everyone. Sessions are team-oriented, competitive, fun, and supportive, guaranteeing optimal fitness results”
Tone House is the brainchild of Alonzo Wilson, a former college football player who developed his workout philosophy training NBA stars and the occasional Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Which you might actually see some of them taking class.
What?
Tone House’s floors are swaddled in black Astroturf with every type of athletic gadget I’ve ever seen waiting for year sweaty hands. The workout is a 60-Minute high intensity workout that changes depending on the day, there are leg days, conditioning days and so on.
The workout is designed to appeal to former athletes who like a little competition, team work is very much a center in this training so if you quit you’re letting your people down. Personally, I am not very competitive nor into sports like that so this was definetly out of my comfort zone.
Everything is a race or a relay. The coaches line you up based on your level of skill, in my case I was in the back since it was my first class. I felt like I was in a really sexy bootcamp (seriously every single person taking the class was HOT). So you’re in this line up and you have to try and keep up with the person in front of you and not be overtaken by the person in back. It’s intense.
All the while the coach is shouting words of encouragement.
What I did love about this class is the camaraderie, seriously everyone was so nice, and everyone motivates each other to keep going, keep pushing. Yes it’s competitive but in that hour, you’re like part of a team trying to win something important. I didn’t want to let them down, so I pushed!
Where?
They currently have one location in Nomad which is a hop skip away from the PATH train if you’re inclined to try it out.
Vomit level
A solid 5.5 aka the hardest class I’ve ever taken in my life. I didn’t vomit, but I did say “I want my mommy” at some point. I remember looking over at Andrew and shaking my head at him. All that being said, it was pretty awesome. I felt like I accomplished something monumental.
Suitable for
Not sure this is suitable for a beginner, they do have “beginner” classes which is what I took and it was brutal. That being said everyone is SO nice, and I think even people who are super athletic and fit have struggled at a certain point, so they all get it. If you want to kick things up a notch, like CrossFit x1000 this is for you, if you’re a former athlete, and love a little friendly competition this is great.
First time? Book a TH Fundamentals (Beginner) or TH101 (Intermediate) session. These formats are designed specifically for those who are new to Tone House.
What to wear/What to bring?
Water, Towel and leave your Ego at home (literally says so on their wall when you walk in)
How much?
If you’re a rookie you can pay $45 for two classes, which I did but never went back because holy shit I got my ass handed to me. But I think I am ready to face my fear and crush that shit. Tonehouse as a wise man once said “I’ll be back”
