One of the most common problems I find among my female clients is transitioning their wardrobe after having kids. These are not just body changes, it’s also life changes, time constraints, and the need to look stylish while chasing a three-year-old. Lynn, as many of you know, fits into this exact category. She has a young daughter and a lot of time constraints but is also someone who cares about her appearance and has great style.
Lynn and I got together and decided to try to maximize her closet, making the mornings a lot easier. Our first step in the process was to audit the closet. Her closet is full of color, pattern, and trendy and vintage pieces. Some of these are great, but she is missing the essentials; those basic pieces that will always look good whether you are going to the park or to a brunch.
As you can see, we got rid of a lot of stuff that we agreed was not going to work with her lifestyle. This included some mini skirts, fitted and out of style tops, and shoes that were never practical. When you are on your feet all day, whether it is with your child or for work, comfort is key. I tell people to get rid of any uncomfortable shoes; you will always regret wearing them. In total, we got rid of three bags of clothes. Next step is to take them to some of my favorite resale shops and make a few dollars before we fill in the blanks.
As we went through the closet, we made a list of some of the essential items that would work for Lynn. Every person has his or her own ultimate wardrobe checklist. For some that will be button downs and cardigans and for others it will be V-neck T-shirts and cashmere pullovers. For Lynn, we want to get the essentials that suit her personal style. Working with a personal stylist is not always about a makeover; in this case, it is a way to organize and coordinate your wardrobe so getting dressed is easier.
