Reading is a deeply personal experience, often times when people ask me for book recommendations it’s based off my preferences and in turn I ask, “What are you into?” There’s a 50/50 chance they’ll enjoy it – different strokes for different folks. But oftentimes, we don’t give enough thought into the where or how we read. What is our comfort space, or as I like to refer to it, our “reading nook” (not the e-reader)?
I believe how you set up your space will enhance your reading experience and make the book all the more memorable. Picture this: young me circa 2000 under a pillow fort reading Lord of the Rings. That is my fandom and I stick to it (sorry HP fans).
The Danish term hygge refers to creating a space to allow for comfort and coziness in order to produce feelings of contentment or warmth. It is a way of life, not just reserved for the winter season, and I apply this notion to my reading space. Candles, fuzzy socks (a must), your favorite beverage, and pillows (maybe a fort applies). Basically, set the mood for your book the way you would set the mood for your partner. Nothing is off limits! If a bath is your jam, do it. If you’re a bookstore reader, treat yourself to a trip. If you have access to a fireplace, get lit. This is self-care that goes beyond face masks and giving ourselves a spa day. This should be a full sensory experience. Many of us would love a dream library within our homes, but until that day comes, here are some ways to enhance your reading space with minimal effort and some books that are all about setting to go along with it.
The Lucky Honeybee (The Heights)
Since living in the Heights, a fireplace or firepit was not available to me, but the “Campfire” candle from The Lucky Honeybee became my scent of choice and really helped set the mood while in a good book. I discovered them during the annual Riverview Farmer’s Market. They also have a great selection of JC merch that makes me feel connected even though I moved away during this wild year (and yes, a fireplace was a must have). Price: $10-$24 USD.
The Southern Book Club Guide to Slaying Vampires
by Grady Hendrix
This entire book is an experience, and it’s out there. A cross between The Help and Interview with A Vampire, there are bugs, rodents, book clubs and true crime. So much southern hospitality with all the fixings, but it was not exactly my cup of tea. You’ll laugh and be disgusted at the same time. Hendrix captures horror well. Just do not eat while reading this!
Saje Natural Wellness (Peppermint Halo Rollerball)
After staring at a screen for 10+ hours a day, cue the 3PM headache or neck tension. With the ultimate cooling tingle, give it 20 mins and your headache is gone. For fans of Tiger Balm or Icy Hot, it builds warmth naturally without harsh chemicals but to keep it real, I just enjoy the sensation while reading. $16 – $28USD.
Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Two words: magical mushrooms. The hype around this book was real, you would think it was Rihanna’s latest album drop. This soon-to-be Hulu series produced by America Ferrera plants Noemí Taboada, a socialite in Mexico City during the mid-1950s, with the task of aiding her cousin who seems to be “losing it” with her new in-laws. The imagery and descriptions work, you can almost feel the texture of the haunted mansion, but there is a caveat, something is still not quite right. This one is a wild ride, read at your risk.
Erin Kumpf Accupuncture & Herbs (Hygge Tea)
Just as the name states, there is nothing more comforting than this unique tea blend with notes of cardamom, ginger, peppermint and elder flower. I’ve been a long-time acupuncture and Chinese medicine follower so when I met Erin years ago, it was a match made in holistic heaven. Everyone I offer this to says there is nothing like it. The longer you seep or mash it, the better it gets. Erin creates this blend herself and offers a cup to every patient who comes through her door. Pick it up in Jersey City Heights, or domestic shipping is available. Price: $12 USD
So grab your bath bomb and soak, open a bottle of wine, or grab your favorite sweater and take the time to curate your space.
