I only have 3a/3b curls and, even then, it’s not the easiest task to find a hairstylist who knows how to properly cut and style my hair. I’ve spent many years going to stylists who cut my hair while it’s wet, and that’s a big nope for me. I currently go to Jersey Curl Salon in Cliffside Park because they’re the only spot I’ve been able to find who knows how to cut my hair and help me keep it healthy. That being said, it made me think about how annoyingly difficult it is for people with curly hair to find a hairdresser who really knows what they’re doing.
We found a few spots in Jersey City that offer services helpful for textured and natural hair, from protective styling to conditioning treatments. Of course, everyone’s hair is different and what may work for one may not work for another. When dealing with curly hair, you should consider your own pattern, porosity, and density. You want to find someone who understands your hair needs and preferences.
If you happen to be curious or want to find some curl-friendly services closer to home, here are some recommendations to start out!
House of Locs
Dreads, braids, and twists are protective styles for natural hair to prevent/decrease breakage and tangling. House of Locs (232 West Side Ave) offers wash and retwist, extensions, and removal of buildup on locs. They specialize in natural hair care, making this a great spot for keeping your hair happy and healthy.
Biscott Boutique & Hair Braiding
Biscott Boutique & Hair Braiding (2 Lincoln St) is friendly to natural hair. They specialize in hair braiding and offer a variety of styles, and many people rave about Rosie at Biscott Boutique.
Tousled Hair Salon

Located in Downtown Jersey City, Tousled (500 Jersey Ave) can handle blow outs and cuts for curly hair. They make sure any cuts would work for hair that’s worn curly or straight (which is a happy medium that can be difficult to find for people who like to wear their hair both ways).
Shampoo JC
Shampoo JC (107 Christopher Columbus Dr) offers services specifically for textured hair, including a curl smoother. They offer complimentary cut consultations if you’d like to ask questions and make sure they offer the services and care you’re looking for!
Lavish Hair Studio
Curly hair needs moisture and conditioning, and Lavish (391 Broadway, Bayonne) offers the treatments that can help! They have conditioning treatments and a Moroccan oil treatment for textured hair, along with color, cuts, styles, sew-ins, and retwists! Lavish recently moved out of Downtown JC and into Bayonne, but they’re definitely worth the trip and conveniently located by the 22nd St Light Rail Station.
