Before becoming a mom, I used to live at the gym. I would literally go straight there from work and spend my whole evening sweating it out, chatting with people at the gym, and utilizing all the wonderful amenities. It sort of was my “thing.” Then I got pregnant and my whole life changed forever. Between working a full-time job, caring for a family and sleeping, when would I be able to get to the gym?
At the “crack of ass” I call it.
I had to change my whole schedule around and become a “morning person”. The idea of waking up everyday at 5am was daunting. But I did it and eventually it became a routine I never let go since then. Now, if I don’t work out first thing in the morning I won’t workout at all. My morning workouts have become essential to my happiness and sanity.
I get asked this a lot: “How and why do you wake up so fucking early to exercise?” Here are a bunch of reasons why switching to morning workouts will absolutely change your life for the better. The tricks and tips on how to get there will be in part two (coming soon!)
1.) Get it over with
Probably the best reason, and why this is number one, wake up and just do it. Your brain won’t even have time to process that you’re up and working out and before you know it, it’s over. You also won’t have the whole day to make excuses why you shouldn’t workout! If you become accustomed to working out in the morning you’re most likely to actually do it.
2.) Makes time for other things/hobbies/relationships after work
Since you already worked out in the morning, think about all the free time you have after work to do other shit! When people invite you out to dinner or drinks you can say yes if you want and not feel any sort of guilt for skipping a workout or indulging in treats- it’s a win win situation.
3.) Fewer distractions
Waking up early before the whole world does is a wonderful time to exercise. There are no distractions, no emails to respond to right away or text messages. It is time for YOU and you only. Especially when you’re a parent this is a great time to get your self care before the kids wake up and the day just evaporates into thin air. I really love the early mornings for exercising, meditation, journaling and doing some creative writing like I am doing right now. ZEN AF.
4.) You will make healthier decisions throughout your day
Good habits create more good habits. When you get into the routine of working out everyday, and knowing what it took to not hit the snooze button for the millionth time, you might say no to the free bagels in the office and stick to a healthier more nutritious meal. Working out in the morning keeps you in touch with your body and it’s needs!
5.) More energy
This is a given. Those endorphins are THE BEST. Even if you just do a quick cardio session to get that heart rate up and blood pumping will give you the energy you need to crush your day.
6.) Happy AF
Why do you think all these fitness people are so fucking happy all the time- it’s because they workout! So imagine how a morning workout can literally change the course of your day?
7.) Sleep better
If I workout in the evening I have a really hard time getting to sleep at night- since exercise does get those endorphins up by the time 10pm rolls around you’re all amped up. Wouldn’t you prefer that kind of energy on your 10am marketing zoom call? I’m just saying. Working out every morning will absolutely help you sleep more soundly at night.
8.) A sense of accomplishment which leads to greater confidence
Think about it, by 9 am you already worked out, had your coffee, showered and got dressed. You already accomplished so much! Now imagine what else you can get done today.
9.) Beat the crowds
If you are working out at a gym, the earlier you go the less people are around which will lead to a more efficient workout and safer- you know with the whole COVID thing going on.
Now how do you get in the habit of waking up to work-out?
