1. Sports might be cut from schools due to budget cuts
Back in 2018, freshman teams were cut and the number of assistant coaches reduced. We might be seeing more sports cut soon if the budget doesn’t have the room for them.

2. Jersey City to become First in the State to Require Illuminated, Identifiable Signage for Rideshare Vehicles
In response to the woman killed in South Carolina for getting into the wrong car after mistaking it for her Uber ride, Mayor Fulop announced an ordinance requiring rideshare vehicles operating within Jersey City to have illuminated signs displayed on the dashboard or windshield. Under this ordinance, the signage must be readable during the daytime at a distance of fifty feet, no larger than eight inches wide by eight inches tall, and must be illuminated in such a way that it is patently visible in darkness.
3. Quality of life complaints can be submitted through Word on the Street app
It’s been out for months, but the Mayor recently shared it on Instagram in an effort to reach a broader audience, making sure more people are aware of this outlet to report issues in the area. You can report public safety issues and communicate directly with officers.
4. Three-alarm fire on Clendenny Ave displaces 28
On April 4th & 5th, the JCFD fought three fires including a large fire on Clendenny Ave that displaced 28 residents among 2 buildings.
5. Omar Alvarez named District’s Teacher of the Year
Language arts teacher Omar Alvarez at PS 5 was named the Jersey City Public Schools’ 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year this week.

9. Man found guilty of dumping daughter’s body in suitcase in Journal Square back in 2018
Remember when a toddler’s body was found in a suitcase last year by the train tracks? Her father was finally found guilty this week and he’s facing a 10-20 year sentence.
10. Write For Change: Youth Essay Contest announced by Students Demand Action Hudson County
Participants are asked to write an essay detailing their plan to address the problem of gun violence in Jersey City. It’s open to public and charter high school students in Jersey City and there will be prizes awarded to winners of the writing contest.
