If you’re looking to welcome a new furry member to your family, I always recommend checking out the animal shelter nearest you. Adopting local helps improve the lives of pets in our community. In Jersey City, our local animal shelter is the Liberty Humane Society, and several pups and cats are looking for a new home. As a long-term volunteer for Liberty Humane Society, I enjoy helping the shelter by providing enrichment to the animals and finding ways to promote the adoptable animals looking for their new homes. I have listed a few of the dogs having difficulty finding a home and could use a little extra attention to help them find their new family.
Meet Adoptable Barry, A Gentle Giant!
Barry is a German Shepherd who is looking for his new home. He loves long walks and enjoys a game of fetch. Barry is a very active pup and would enjoy a home where he can receive structured playtime. A house with a fenced yard would be ideal for him! When he doesn’t want to play, he enjoys butt scratches and hanging out, so get ready for a big mush who enjoys cuddling.
When Barry arrived at the shelter, staff learned he does not have leash manners and probably received very little training. The team at LHS is working hard with training Barry while he is residing at the shelter, but he will need a patient and willing home to help him become the wonderful pup he truly is. Also, since Barry is a very strong boy, he will need a firm handler. For more information and cute videos, check out his Petfinder profile here.

Meet Adoptable Salem, a Sweet Senior Pup!
Senior dogs hold a special place in my heart, and Salem has so much joy to bring to her new family’s life. But don’t be fooled by Salem’s age. Although she is a senior gal, there is puppy energy in her. She enjoys running and playing fetch.
Salem will happily overwhelm you with her kisses when she isn’t playing, as she is extremely affectionate and has a lot of love to share with you. She is currently in a foster home, and they adore her and only have good things to share. So, if you have room in your heart and home for a senior dog, consider setting up a meet and greet with Salem! For more information and cute videos, check out her Petfinder profile here.

Meet Adoptable Noni, a Couch Potato!
Noni came to the shelter with a leg injury that did not heal properly. It has resulted in her having a limp, but it does not stop her from walking and living her life. This sweet girl has a lot of love to share with you. She enjoys cuddling and is the perfect companion to watch movies with and relax. A few of Noni’s favorite things in life are comfy beds, especially with many layers of blankets and, of course giving kisses. She can’t wait to meet you! But, she needs a patient family who can help her gain confidence as meeting new people can be overwhelming for her.

Interested in Adopting or Fostering?
To adopt or receive more information, please fill out an application found here. If you aren’t ready to adopt, consider opening your heart and home by fostering. Animals in foster care avoid the stress of the shelter environment and are provided the chance to be themselves, allowing adopters to learn more. You also help open space for incoming stray animals enabling the shelter to help more homeless animals in need. If interested in fostering, you can start by filling out an application found here.
