Are you single and looking to mingle? You’d be surprised how many people in your area are just like you. If you’re tired of the endless dating websites and apps on your phone that promise you a lifelong mate in 5 minutes flat, then keep reading because we want to bring the fun (and humanity) back into meeting new people. Did you know that according to Huffington Post, Jersey City is the number 9 best place to be single in all of America?! Yep thats right, so stop swiping to the left, and stop swiping to the right. Instead, head outside and enjoy all the vibrant people that Jersey City has to offer.
1. Base Gym
Base Gym is one of the premier gyms Jersey City has to offer, not to mention there are dozens of young, fit, and in shape people roaming around. Base has modern decor and is located in the heart of Downtown on Christopher Columbus Dr. Sign up for a trial membership if you’re not ready to commit and get to know some people who have some similar fitness goals as you.
2. Volunteer work
Chances are if you like helping out the community, you’ll find someone else here who does too. To find out about volunteer opportunities, check our ChicpeaJC calendar of events for ways to get involved or simply Click Here.
3. Mix and Mingle at the Best Local Bars
South House, Miss Wong’s, LITM, and Barcade are all great options to meet and strike up conversations with people. Barcade has tons of old school games to talk about, LITM has seasonal artwork and great drinks, Miss Wong’s is packed wall to wall with young single people looking to dance, and South House is just one of the most original bars Jersey City has to offer. Challenge a stranger to a game of shuffle board. You never know what could happen!
4. WORD Bookstore Readings
WORD Bookstore has tons of book reading events and has a cafe in-house. Attend a book reading with like-minded individuals and start up some instant conversation. For a schedule of events at WORD Bookstore, click here.
5. Festivals and Parties
Festivals and parties are great ways to meet new and single people. One of the main events coming up is LSC After Dark in collaboration with Midnight Market. Save the date because it’s going down September 21st, and it’s 90s style! This is the perfect time to meet a 90’s baby ;). On October 7th, ChipeaJC will be partnering up with Gringos Tacos JC to throw a block party right by the Gringo’s restaurant. So get out and enjoy some great food and good music. Sure does beat that app on your phone, eh?
6. Free yoga in the park and healthy juice bars
Attending free yoga at the Riverview Park in the Heights of Jersey City is a great place to meet singles, as well as healthy juice and smoothie bars. Squeeze’D on Coles Street is a personal favorite but there are tons all over the city. Find a friend at yoga and take them out for a round of smoothies.
7. Dog parks
Dog parks are a great place to meet singles that love animals and pets just as much as you do. Some great dog parks in the area are Washington park, located in the Heights of Jersey City; Newport dog run, located just near Newport Mall; Van Vorst dog run located near Van Vorst Park; and Pier 13 in Hoboken is very dog (and drink) friendly as well.
8. Art Museums
Now that fall is here, JC Fridays will begin its Studio art tours every Friday of the month. Just choose a Friday and neighborhood near you, and be prepared to meet with some of the locals in your area. For a calendar of studio tours, click here.
9. Networking events
There are tons of networking events where young single people are looking to mingle. Boss Up JC at the ChicpeaJC studio is taking place on September 19th and is the perfect place to talk and mingle with other people looking to make it in the creative field. Find a particular subject of interest and head over to mix and mingle.
10. Classes
Classes are a great place to meet other singles and talk to like-minded people. In Jersey City alone, you can register for a class of your interest at Hudson County Community College, St Peters University, and NJCU. If the classroom isn’t for you, sign up for a painting class, spin class, or kickboxing at your local gym.
*Small reminder* While this list is a great guide to meeting new and single people, the best way to test for compatibility is to find the things on this list that best match your hobbies, i.e don’t go to the gym just to meet people if you don’t work out, and it’s probably not a good idea to hang out at the dog park if you hate animals. :)
