ChicpeaJC turned one over a month ago. Up until a few weeks ago I was a one woman show until I hired Crystal Davis!
Crystal, a JC native, has been helping with all sorts of tasks from transcribing interviews, calendar management to covering events. Soon she will also be doing her own series of interviews! Her joining the team made me realize that having different voices and perspectives would be a great addition to this growing website. That is why we are seeking new contributors to join the team!
We are looking for 2-3 people who are interested in posting approximately three articles a month!
Qualifications:
- Great writing skills.
I know my writing isn’t always the best, and I am working on getting better, but I am still seeking those who have great writing skills!
- Must live in Jersey City.
This is kind of an obvious one, this is a Jersey City blog, so I seek people who live here and are interested in the culture and covering events.
- Positive attitude.
ChicpeaJC is not a news outlet; we are not art critics, food connoisseurs, etc. All articles must be positive. My mom always said, “If you have nothing good to say, don’t say it”.
- Can commit to 2-3 articles a month.
We need someone who can commit to 2-3 articles a month as well as be able to help cover events when necessary.
- Must have great communication skills.
When covering events, you might just need to convince someone to let you take a photo of them. You may also be needed to talk to political figures or JC celebs—we need the fearless and the excited!
- Superb editing skills.
While writing is the key forefront for ChicpeaJC, you must also know how to edit. Depending on how you cover events—via voice memo or note pad—you must carefully view your work. Voice memo transcriptions can sometime be difficult depending on the interviewee’s vocal speed—therefore you must be patient but also be mindful.
With the quickening pace of ChicpeaJC we have time for small mistakes but not huge errors.
- Must be open to constructive criticism.
Before Crystal began at ChicpeaJC, she was the editor-in-chief of her college newspaper. You should be open to constructive criticism on completed works and be willing to improve your writing strengths! Positivity is key as well as confidence in writing!
- Have social media knowledge.
Must have Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Part of blogging is also sharing your posts on social media, as well as promoting the events you are attending!
- Must LOVE to have fun!
Covering events is fun. If you don’t like fun, you can’t hang with ChicpeaJC.
Compensation
This is a volunteer gig, you will be paid in a lot of love, free lunches, when possible, and we will cover expenses incurred when covering a story/event. This is a great way to get exposure; if you have a blog you can also add your website and info as cross-promotion.
Application process
Please send a cover letter including topics that you would be interested in covering, a short bio and all social media links to chicpealife@gmail.com
