If you’re planning on taking a traditional cold-weather vacation, it’s likely that your plans include skiing! If you’re not much of a skier (or snowboarder), you’re probably not too excited about your upcoming vacay. But not to worry, there are plenty of fun and exciting winter activities in cold weather destinations that will have you avoiding the slopes altogether! Check out our list of the best winter activities for non-skiers.
Snow Tubing
Personally, as a non-skier, snow tubing has always been one of my favorite alternative winter activities. Many ski mountains offer tubing nearby, and there’s no feeling quite like whizzing down an icy slope in a massive rubber tube!
Ice Skating
A classic winter activity, ice skating is something you should do whether you plan to hit the slopes or not! Rent a pair of skates and hold hands as you glide along the ice to cheesy Christmas music. When you’re ready, warm up with some hot cocoa and marshmallows!
Dog Sledding
Depending on your destination, dog sledding may be offered as a unique wintertime activity! Fun at any age, you’ll be bundled up cozy and warm while you’re pulled by an enthusiastic team of pups through a gorgeous winter landscape. Skiing simply dulls in comparison!
Sleigh Rides
Traditional sleigh rides offer another unique opportunity for winter fun. Enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage against the breathtaking backdrop of snowy white mountains and a charming winter town. A once-in-a-lifetime experience, sleigh rides make for a pretty great alternative to skiing!
Christmas Markets
Depending on your destination, many winter towns have charming Christmas markets to explore. Stroll through the rows of vendors selling traditional treats and sip on a warm glass of gluwein (mulled wine) before continuing the fun at an aprés ski!
Snowshoeing
A fun and active alternative to skiing, snowshoeing through piles of snow is a great workout! Slip on your snowshoes and float above the snow as you make your way through scenic wooded trails. The best way to enjoy a winter hike, snowshoeing is where it’s at!
Snowmobiling
If you’re not a skier but are still looking for a thrill, snowmobiling is for you. A true winter adventure, you’ll love whipping your way through snowy trails and exploring uncharted terrain at your leisure. Snowmobiling offers an exhilarating way to take in the best winter sights.
