If you’re like me and recently moved to a new city, or if you haven’t moved but are looking to make some new friends in your own city, you’ll want to keep reading! As adults (and especially as adults during Covid), it can be hard to make new friends. Where do you even begin? If you’ve found yourself in this same predicament, worry no more, here are 10 ways to make friends in a new city!
Join an intramural sports team
Whether you’re super competitive or just want to have some fun, joining an IM sports team is a great way to meet new people! Weekly games with your teammates offer plenty of opportunities for team bonding which can lead to friendships outside of the game as well.
Bumble Bff
Now hear me out, some people have had seriously good luck making friends on Bumble BFF! Though this seems like a quirky way to make new friends, a lot of people are in the same position and have no idea how to meet people in a new city. Bumble BFF is a great way to make connections and meet new people, and a lot of the people using the app are as normal as you are!
Join a book club
An awesome way to meet people with shared interests, joining a book club is a great way to unwind during the week. Read books on your favorite topics then engage in discussion with your fellow members over snacks and wine, what could be better?!
Get involved in your local religious community
Chances are, your local religious community would love to have you! Even if you’re not religious, a lot of local organizations offer social and community outreach events to participate in. A great way to meet like minded people in a new city, getting involved in your religious community could be the way to go!
Volunteer
Another great way to make new friends is by volunteering in your community. Whether that’s at a soup kitchen, helping out in the more underprivileged parts of the city, heading to the local animal shelter, or anything else, volunteering is a fun way to give back and meet others doing the same!
Try an exercise class
Joining an exercise class will not only introduce you to new people, but it’ll keep you in shape, too! From SoulCycle to Crossfit to Yoga and more, there are endless options for workout classes to try, regardless of what city you’re in.
Join a sports team fan club
Many cities have local bars dedicated to a particular sports team, or at least always show a particular team’s games! An awesome way to meet your fellow sports fans, joining a sports team fan club will help you meet people who share your interests over some wings and beer!
Reach out to your university alumni community
Similarly, your university alumni community can introduce you to a whole group of people in your area you’ve already got something in common with! From attending college meetups to watching your school’s sports games and attending alumni philanthropy events, use your university’s alumni community to meet new people wherever you are!
Take a foreign language class
If you’re interested in learning a new language, joining a foreign language class is a fun way to meet interesting people in your area! Meet new friends to practice with and improve your language skills in the process.
