Veganuary is something people tend to get into as a way of starting the year on a healthier note, incorporating plant-based foods into their diets in order maintain some level of clean eating. It all started with the charity Veganuary, which encourages people to try out a plant-based diet for at least a month, hopefully to last throughout the year and years to come.
In 2017, some new options in the area have presented themselves while other well-known spots have become favorites through time. While you can always stick to our past lists, here are a few other options worth checking out.
Feel free to let us know what other vegan-friendly spots we should check out that we haven’t mentioned over the past few years!
P&K Food Market
170 Newark Ave
This isn’t a new spot and it’s not a restaurant, but I just enjoy it too much to leave it off of any list. They offer a variety of fruits and veggies, and there are plenty of vegan products. You can buy cheese, chicken, crackers, noodles, and more – all plant based, of course. After all, the best way to stick to your new plant-based habits is to cook your food at home. My go-to plant based recipes are often from hotforfoodblog.com, since the recipes keep plant-based cooking interesting.
Juice Basin
336 2nd St
If you’re into juice cleanses, want some healthy beverage options, or want to try raw vegan foods, Juice Basin is a great option. They also have shots with cayenne, ginger, and all those good ingredients to keep your body in check.
Shakin NJ
342 7th St

Originally in Union City, Shakin’ has made its way into Hamilton Park in JC. They offer some simple and affordable vegan foods, as well as a hefty menu of smoothies and juices with delicious ingredients – fruits, veggies, and even plant protein.
Porta
135 Newark Ave

We’ve included Porta in a previous list but since then, they’ve included a few more pie options for vegan customers! They have 5 pies – focaccia, marinara, Rita & Mark, Snawzeech, and De La Rocha. If you’re looking for comfort foods with friends and don’t want to break your veganism, check out Porta and get a pie.
Omninon
Food Truck
Again, not new, but I only recently had the chance to try out their sliders and I fell in love. Their veggie burger sliders are perfect, and my personal favorite is the Shepherd’s Slider. If you ever happen see the truck around Jersey City, be sure to stop by and pick one (or a few) up.
Salt + Seed
Harborside Financial Center
Sald + Seed is a plant-based eatery within the Harborside Financial Center building. You can grab a wrap, pasta, and even soup (perfect for the current weather).
