Greenville is home to some of the city’s best culinary treats. One of those treats is Neptune Bakery and Deli, which has been at the corner of Neptune Avenue and the Boulevard for decades. From the outside and upon walking in, it seems like an older, but still ordinary bakery. But Neptune is so much more than that. It’s one of my favorite bakeries in the city, and one of the few spots where you can satisfy your late-night cravings for a fresh, extensive range of sweets. That’s because Neptune is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The most popular menu item, and the one that nearly every regular will rave about is the custard cup. People travel from all over the region for these custard cups, and after trying one, it’s easy to see why. These custard cups are the real deal, folks, and they’re some of the best I’ve ever had. They are rich, and they have the perfect amount of sweetness – you’ll definitely want more than one (maybe even five) of these made-on-site treats.
Not a fan of custard cups? I’ll forgive you, but be sure to try their cannoli, apple turnovers, cookies, macaroons, coconut custard, or cakes. Pretty much all of these treats are homemade and fresh. Reflecting the neighborhood’s large Filipino population, the bakery also offers a wide range of Filipino pastries, many of which are delivered from the Philippine Bread House. Sweets not your thing (-gasp-)? If you want something a bit more savory, Neptune Bakery and Deli also has – you guessed it – a deli. From here, you can get simple, yet tasty, butter rolls or more generously filled sandwiches to satisfy your craving. The portions are large, and as with everything at the bakery, the deli is affordable.
Craving more? Check out Neptune and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
P.S. Just in case you end up eating too many custard cups, there is a Citi Bike station just one block away at Columbia Park! Enjoy!
