I love summer weekends! It often times means BBQ season. A great side dish to whip up if you are going to someone’s place or hosting is hummus. It goes well with meat for you carnivores, or even delicious Veggie Burgers for the “others”.
The thing about store bought hummus is that it is full of unnecessary ingredients, they add various preservatives to keep it fresh and that can’t be good for you. Here are the ingredients of a well known store bought hummus brand:
Cooked Chickpeas (Chickpeas [Garbanzos], Water), Tahini (Ground Sesame), Soybean Oil, Red Bell Peppers,Garlic, Salt, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate added to maintain freshness, Natural Flavors.
What the fuck is “natural flavors”?!? Citric Acid?

Hummus Recipe
I think you are all clued into the fact that I love anything to do with chickpeas. Naturally, hummus is one of my favorite things to eat. To be honest I could probably live off it. I got this recipe years ago from my mom, it is extremely easy but the problem is that there is no exactly measurements , you basically have to taste as you make it.
Ingredients
- 2-3 Cans of Organic Chickpeas (duh)
- 2 TBSP Tahini Paste
- 2 Lemons
- 1.5 Tsp of Cumin
- Salt
- 0.5 TBSP of Minced Garlic
Step 1: In a high powered blender like a Vitamix or a food processor add 2 cans of chickpeas (drain the cans but not all the way)
Step 2: Add tahini paste, cumin, garlic, juice of one lemon, salt.
Step 3: Fire it up!!!
Step 4: It should be nice and creamy, if you think the consistency is too runny add more chickpeas and a little more tahini sauce (that is why you need that extra can). If it is too thick add a little water.
Step 5: TASTE, TASTE, TASTE. Ask yourself the following: Does it need more salt? Does it need more garlic? Does it taste bland? if so add cumin… catch my drift. Sometimes you will make this and hit it on the nail and won’t need to modify. Other days you will have to taste and adjust. I swear otherwise it’s still an easy recipe!!
Look at that creamy goodness…. nom nom nom
Step 6: If you want to be fancy, pour the hummus on a nice dish, sprinkle a few chickpeas on top, some Zaatar spice and a touch of olive oil and you are ready for the chickpea party!!
