A few months ago at a Comedy Benefit for Cancer at the Dopeness I met Steve Donz, one of the founders of The Stay Free Movement. SFM is a non profit organization that “promote a person’s ability to “Stay Free” of negativity and to protect what keeps them free physically, mentally, and spiritually” (post coming soon).
When I met Steve, we clicked right away, his passion to help people and his positive energy is infectious. Him and Zak are the founders of SFM and they invited me out to lunch before their interview at one of their favorite food spots in McGinley Square, Diana’s Fried Kitchen.
I rode my bike to meet them for lunch, and I am so glad I did because I don’t think I’ve eaten this much since….well since interviewing Steven at Helen’s Pizza!! I am normally not a big fan of fried foods, but Diana’s kitchens is so fresh, it didn’t feel overly greasy at all and I ate more than the guys did! It was so delicious. BEST FRIED CHICKEN I’VE EVER HAD. I stand by that 100%.
Diana’s kitchen is a no frills lunch spot but has so much heart. You can tell by all the sticky notes on the wall how much people love this place. Diana is the loving owner and cook and she was so sweet and hospitable. If you want to indulge and spend less than 10$ on a massive lunch, they are the place to go to. If you want to keep it light you can order their grilled chicken which was also amazing.
Diana, what are the sticky notes? People love our food so they write it on sticky notes and put it on the mirror.
I am so excited to try it! How long have you been open? One year and 8 months.
What makes your chicken the best? It’s the love. Our own secret recipe!
What am I going to eat today? Whatever you would like.
Surprise me. I will try everything!!
What’s your take on Diana’s fried chicken, Zak? I think it’s amazing because it’s a neighborhood spot for Bergen ave… the owner helps out a lot of kids that have no money for food… the homeless, he will let them in for a few hours when its cold out. He lets kids play cards in here… he is always the first to help people out.
How often do you come eat? (Steve) I come in here every few days at least to say hello. Eating wise, I come once a week.
What do you eat? (Steve) Double cheeseburger and I always get chicken.
Are you going to eat that piece? (Zak) It’s all yours.
Yo. Can we reschedule your interview for another day? I need a nap.
