In the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, eating seasonally is held in such high regard that it has its own term: ritucharya.
Our modern times have given us access to a huge variety of fruits and vegetables year-round. While this has many perks, many of us have become disconnected from our food in the process.
The Benefits of Eating Seasonally
To put it simply, produce that is grown and produced during its appropriate season is fresher, tastier, more nutritious, and easier to digest.
Foods grown out of season are unable to follow the natural growing and ripening rhythms. To meet consumer demand year-round, ripening agents are used. Recent research has found that artificially ripened produce is often not as nutritionally dense as naturally ripened produce.
It’s also a cheaper way to have the best tasting fruits and vegetables available.
Take a trip to your local farmer’s market and test out the theory for yourself.
