On Thursday October 12th, our #SendNudes exhibit opened as part of the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour! It was such an incredible night with great people, live performances and delicious bites by Casa Cubano.
The event started at 6PM and people started rolling in, enjoying the food, and admiring the art. It was great to meet all the artists behind the work, and everyone really enjoyed the theme.
We kicked things of with a performance by SIS, who sang 3 songs. She’s super talented! We also had performances by Sasha, Icon, and Sins of Alize.
This is the first time we’ve participated in JCAST, and our opening night was a huge success! We also raised $250 for WomenRising, so we thank everyone for donating and anyone who is a part of our #SendNudes show. One of the artists actually sold their piece, which makes us very happy.
Overall, I’d say opening night was a blast.
Our studio will be open all weekend for the Studio Tour! Check out some of the artists involved –

The Exquisite Truth is a series of self portrait diptychs in which I explore the idea of body positivity with myself. I began studying perspectives of other women who write about the experience of being an over weight woman in a society that thrives on size obsession. I too had found myself succumbing to the obsession. Upon reading pieces on body positivity I realized how much respect I gained for these women. Women, who did not let a cultures disapproving eyes dictate what they wore and how they viewed, loved or respected themselves. The series was created while I was in the midst of a physically and emotionally abusive relation and eventually the work became a way to cope/overcome.
The project has been exhibited through out the U.S. More recently it was accepted into Jersey City’s for City Hall’s Women’s History show, “Don’t Be Afraid”. The work was taken down by City Hall employees without my knowledge and censored from the show. After the incident I began the hashtag: #jerseysendnudes as a response. I believe the work fits the theme of the show because in 2017 (as proven by our own City Hall) embracing and displaying your own body as a woman of size and color is a political act.

Status Symbol
A status symbol is a perceived visible, external denotation of one’s social position and perceived indicator of economic or social status.. what I am trying to convey in this piece is the relation between a male’s sex appeal and the things we buy as an extension of that.. no pun intended.
This piece is part of a new collection being featured in my new upcoming art show, not for sale at the moment.

This series of work focuses on interpretations of average women and transforming what at first glance seem to be ordinary scenes into something beautiful and unexpected. Even mundane tasks and movements can be reframed by looking intently and seeing beyond initial impressions.

So many times women are told they have to look a specific way, that they have to fit a mold that has been ingrained in their mind by the unattainable standards of media. Women’s bodies are sexualized and they are looked at more like an object than a person. The thing that the media often forgets is that these standards and ideas put into the minds of young girls is something that they will carry into their future and it will hinder their acceptance of themselves. Girls and women want to fit this unattainable media mold and fail to see how beautiful their uniqueness truly is because they have been taught that fitting in is the most important thing. I created this series to represent women embracing the beauty of their bodies, no matter the flaws they may see due to the falsest of beauty standards in todays world.

A woman’s body comes in all different shapes and sizes. We don’t get encouraged to love the skin we are in, because of how society believes we should look. Living in a generation of self love and feminism, I have learned to love the skin I’m in. No matter the size or shape everyone women should feel beautiful in their imperfect skin. Each image resembles a reflection on how real women look. There’s no Photoshop or filter. Real woman in their skin happy. If you got it, FLAUNT IT!!

My work explores female objectification through a variety of lenses. The consumer culture, the male gaze, and social media and are continually attempting to sell, depict, and classify women. Images from sources like Instagram and advertisements are selling much more than a product. They are promising a life of fantasy and frivolity that is concocted and therefore unattainable. Yet these ubiquitous and inescapable enticements are capable of shaping our cultural values. The result of this invasion of manufactured imagery is a superficial society that puts surface qualities in the forefront and elevates them to the plateau of desire. These qualities include impossible ideals such as a ‘hot’ body, smooth skin, fashionable clothing, and an active social/romantic life. Similar to our current political climate, the line between truth and fiction is blurred. Many women are seeking acceptance and worth based on the reception of their fabricated images and getting farther and farther from their intrinsic, real value.

The #SendNudes theme captures an expression of life stripped down to nothing and in that state exposing everything real. We are conditioned to believe that being in tune with our sexuality and authenticity is risky. Smoke Slow, In Love, and The Truth were all written in the nude. During the making of each piece, I was fearlessly naked and each one is penetratingly sincere. Nudity is raw and brave whether it’s a naked body or a bare mind. My poetry is my truth and in that moment I’d embraced life undisguised. You are reading the feeling at the bottom of my gut; this is the deepest darkest box in my mind. There’s no better feeling than living life naked. We should all send more of these beautifully fervent nudes into the world because in them lives our true being.

My inspiration for the bunny head shoot came from another shoot I was doing and saw a panda head in a shop window in Miami back in February. The salesgirl wouldn’t let me shoot with it so it got my mind spinning with crazy ideas of how I could get animal costume heads and what I could do. The 2 models were totally down to do it. It started out with them wearing dresses along with the heads having a tea party.. The shoot progressed into them wearing lingerie and then finally being nude.. I wasn’t trying to portray them in any kind of fetish or pornography. Just simply as art. I’m a fairly new photographer with lots of crazy ideas and I’m super happy one was able to come to life.

This piece deals with how people are looking for instant satisfaction instead of building a foundation with someone. Flings are being confused with relationships now, lust is being confused with love now, and not being faithful is the new cool. I am interested in how social media and technology play a role in this lack of connection to the characteristics of loyalty, commitment, communication, trust, and love, which are being replaced with lust, sadness, selfishness, and depression . . . though love still manages to slip through the cracks.

The intent of my work is to embrace the nude form. I depict the naked body in most of my work with highlights on areas that are common for myself and many women i know to be self-conscious about. It’s important to me to purposely point out these “flaws” because I want people to realize how beautiful they are even with a few little marks on their skin. However, I choose to take it a step further in my work because I want every person to embrace their body. So I exclude most if not all skin tones in most of my work. By not using skin tones it disregards the barrier of race with the figure; making it universal for everyone to free proudly represented.

This piece symbolizes inner growth and acceptance. Accepting your own flaws is one of the hardest things to do but once you do you feel free from yourself. Once you have accepted that you are growing.

Human figure is challenging and beautiful subject for artists. My vision for these studies was to focus on contrast, light and form. Through art, I am always reminded how beautiful people are regardless or age, shape or gender.

“Paid in Flesh” is an exploration of empowered female sexuality and how it relates to a material world. She is roused, bare, libertine, deliberate, and Carnic. Your money’s no good here.

This collection relates with the theme #SendNudes because most parents, both men + female lack time. And the time they do conserve is dedicated to others and not on themselves. #SendNudes isn’t just about sending them to other people but also sending them to yourself. Being aroused by the thought of you, the naked you. This collection illustrates an afternoon I once had where I spent the entire afternoon (2 hours) reminding myself of who I am down to the cheeks. I was able to relive that excitement and sense of transparency with my good friend Photographer, Alx Guzman of NYC during this shoot. Today i #sendnudes to you all to remind you to get naked, get turned on, and love yourself.
