On June 11th, we attended Pajama Day at A Harry Moore School to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The school held an assembly to hand out prizes to some of the best pajamas.

We had the chance to chat with one of the students to learn more about the school.

What’s your name?

Charity Elaine Lewis.

And how long have you been coming to the school?

For a very long time.

Tell me a little bit about it.

When I first came here, I was kind of a shy kid. I became outspoken over the years, got stronger and started talking a lot, and now I’m a chatterbox.

I love it, how old are you?

I’m 14.

Since when have you been going to this school?

I started here at 5 years old.

What’s your favorite part about being in this school?

Just meeting new people every day.

You have a lot of friends?

Yeah!

What do you like to do for fun?

When I’m at home, I probably dance around or sketch or do whatever I normally do.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

I don’t know! I have so many things.

Dana was mentioning you’re into fashion. What’s your favorite style or fashion personality?

One of my favorites is one of the outfits that I wore yesterday where it was a light blue pair of jeans, a white shirt, and a jean jacket. That’s my basic outside self.

Where in Jersey City do you live?

Curries Woods.

What do you love about Jersey City?

The noise, probably.

So today’s Pajama Day. Can you tell me more about it?

We use Pajama Day as a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. When we do have Pajama Day, the kids wear pajamas and donate $2. Faculty and staff donate $5 as a donation to help cure leukemia and lymphoma.

That’s great! Now everyone gets to wear pajamas today?

Yeah. Some chose not to, but most of them are wearing pajamas today.

A. Harry Moore School provides a comprehensive educational and therapeutic program for students with multiple disabilities. You can take a tour of the space if you’re interested. Formal placement goes through the school district Child Study Team, and interviews are held to assure that students’ needs and IEP can be implemented.
