Last night the hubby and I attended Lunar Mania! at the Liberty Science Center. A special “after hours” event to witness a rare supermoon eclipse—the only one we’ll see for the next 18 years! When the moon travels into Earth’s shadow, its entire visible surface appears light red.
We arrived at around 7:45pm and we were greeted by Mary Meluso who’s been working at Liberty Science Center for many years now! She showed us the lay of the land and gave us some useful background info no the LSC….The first thing we decided to do was check out Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon laser show in the world’s largest IMAX Dome theater!
It was awesome!! To be quite honest, I sort of wished I was in a different “state-of-mind” before watching this show!! Regardless, it was really awesome and so trippy! I loved it so much I am trying to convince the LSC people to do another “after hour” event in the near future. Science meets nightlife! It’s genius.
After the laser show the hubby and I went to get drinks at the bar and ordered two Milky Ways. So delicious!! They were pretty strong and we really considered going to see the laser show again!
There was activities for all ages and even a DJ spinning some fun tunes. BEST NIGHT EVER!
It was time to set up shop outside and wait for the super blood moon. Since this event was BYOB (bring your own binoculars) we brought ours from home (we use it to spy on our neighbors and occasionally bird watch).
At around 10:11pm CEO Paul Hoffman, and my new favorite JC person said a toast along with Mayor Fulop and his hot girlfriend Jaclyn. #babealert
Unfortunately for us, the clouds covered the supermoon!! But we were able to catch the visuals inside as they had a screen setup with a live feed from NASA.
What an amazing evening, we had such a good time. The Liberty Science Center is a great place, we are so lucky that we have it in our own backyard!! We have a yearly membership (it’s so worth it, and I highly recommend getting one) and we plan on using it way more.

Lunar Mania. And that’s exactly what it was. It was a night chockfull of everything related to space and the moon. The event had events for people of all ages and didn’t stop short for teaching both children and adults alike about the science of the moon.
Unfortunately my phone died midway through the event so I didn’t get to capture it on camera. However, what I did get to do was really enjoy it for what it was and detach from technology for a bit. My boyfriend and I have always been astronomy buffs so this was the biggest event that we’ve gone to in months. Having missed the most recent Perseids meteor shower due to not being able to get away from light population or clouds, we used tonight to our advantage.
We made it to Liberty Science Center around 8:30pm and began by scanning our surroundings for true Lunar Mania. The DJ and the strobe lights really made the event feel like a rave. Kids and parents were at activity booths making space-based arts and crafts. Around 9:00pm we went to see Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon laser show in the IMAX theater. There was nothing like being spaced out and on the edge of your seat for an entire album.
Despite not being able to take photos, we got to see the live stream of the lunar eclipse, and I’ll tell you what—it was a night to remember. I’m looking forward to the next Super Blood Moon in 18 years!
