Last Friday I asked my new friend and girl boss of Allure Events Consultants , Marelyn to help me cover the Celebration of Hispanic Heritage at City Hall. You guys want to know what I was doing instead? I was on my couch, half passed out. Thanks Marelyn for giving me the night off!!
It’s been a fun-filled month of celebrating Hispanic Heritage. So many great events, recognitions and celebrations have happened and continue throughout the month… So when CHICpea asked if I would guest blog about the Celebration of Hispanic Heritage in Jersey City City Hall Council Chambers this past Friday evening, I was thrilled! So…here it goes!
National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th of each year and ends October 15th. It is a month-filled-tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
The celebration in City Hall of Jersey City began with a few words from Mayor Steven Fulop who acknowledged the importance of Latinos; which consists of 42.2% of the city’s population.
The talented Lyrical Opera Soprano, Giselle Bellas, sang the National Anthem and blessings followed immediately.
Councilman-at-Large Daniel Rivera and Freeholder Junior Maldonado were alongside Senator Sandra B. Cunningham, gave a few remarks and presented seven proclamations to recipients who have made a positive influence within the community. Congratulations are in order for: Mr. Adilio Gonzalez, Mr. Ramon Cruz, Dr. Humberto T. Perez, Mr. Johnny Baez, Channel 41 Univision, Dr. Vincent Castro and Sgt. Lorenzo Tosado.
A cheering crowd applauded the honorees and a sense of community was felt. Musical and dance performances by Tony Bravo, Liberty High School, Strike a Pose Studio and Salsa Fever On 2 Dance Academy entertained all. What a perfect way to carry on the celebration! Food and refreshments were provided at the conclusion of the ceremony by local businesses: Taco Mobile Food Truck, O LaLa Empanadas & International Cuisine, La Isla Bonita Restaurant, Angel Azul Bakery Café, El Sazón de Las Americas, Carmen Rosa Bakery, Argentina Bakery Inc., Yulie’s Place, El Boricua Lechonera and El Rinkoncito Peruano.
The month-long tributes and celebrations recreate the traditions that provide a sense of nostalgia behind the pride of our roots. With just a few days left for National Hispanic Heritage Month, be sure to look up events near you to support and celebrate our heritage.
Let the celebrations continue!
