The Marvel Universe is one of the largest comic book universes out there with some of the most iconic characters – the X-Men, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, the list goes on. Back in 2013, Marvel Comics announced that Kamala Khan would take over the Ms. Marvel series, and her story starts right here in Jersey City.
Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager, making her Marvel’s first headlining Muslim character. Upon creating the character, the writers wanted to give Khan a significant background and place of origin. They eventually landed on creating Khan as a Desi girl from Jersey City, especially for the city’s close proximity to Manhattan.
Kamala Khan has shapeshifting abilities and takes over the role of Ms. Marvel as the original Ms. Marvel becomes Captain Marvel. After 5 years of comics, we’ll get to see Khan as Ms. Marvel in the upcoming series expected to be released on Disney’s new streaming platform, Disney+.
