The fight for the protection of Liberty State Park continues as developers try to privatize the land for commercial development.
Sam Pesin and the Friends of Liberty State Park volunteers are asking all residents in the area to rally on September 25th to urge Governor Phil Murphy and all state legislators to support the Liberty State Park Protection Act and save Caven Point from privatization.
For 45 years, protestors have been fighting to keep Liberty State Park and Caven Point open to the public and away from the hands of developers. Reebok CEO Paul Fireman is known for trying to acquire Caven Point – a critical habitat for wildlife – to be converted into golf holes accessible only to the wealthy members of the Liberty National golf club. Protestors and volunteers are now urging legislators to make this the year the Act passes.
The Liberty State Park Protection Act would establish a nine-person advisory committee to help the Department of Environmental Protection plan Liberty State Park’s future and take privatization off the table – with the exception of “small-scale commercial activities” as defined by the Act. This could include bicycle or kayak rentals, food concession, winter skating rinks, commercial boat tours, and the use of the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal.
Join the rally on September 25th at 11AM at the South side Flag Plaza. The rain date is October 2 at 11AM.
