Tomorrow is our big Halloween 80’s prom bash! We are so excited to present to you the band DIYGFY that will be bringing the house down with some original tunes and throwbacks!!!! These guys have awesome energy and I can’t wait to see them live. I reached out to Danny from DIYGFY to give us a little background on the band and what we can expect from the party.
What does DIYGFY stand for? DIYGFY = do it yourself or go fuck yourself
DIYGFY = do it yourself it’s good for you
If you only know how to do one thing, you’re doing it wrong.
Nice, Where are you from? We grew up in the suburbs of Phoenix Arizona. People tend to know it for the headlines: dry heat, prisoners in pink underwear, chain gangs, one big fenced boarder, and Indians. It’s mostly true but once you step away from those sore thumbs it’s basically California junior. Fake tits, big money, and reckless teenagers. You can imagine how the two ends of the spectrum might intersect, especially with the pink underwear.
When did you start playing music? We both come from musical tribes. Like all of our contemporaries, we were coming of age at a time when access to literally every kind of music was possible. The times of gathering around the radio with the family were long gone, radios were and are everywhere. The first time I got my hands on a record and a player I tried scratching it because hip hop was happening in a big way and I was sure that was the intended use. You can imagine the both of us at 9 years old jamming to TLC and Tag Team.
How did you two meet? Growing up in a red state we had a surprising number of artistic extracurriculars at our disposal. We both joined the same school choir in middle school and again in high school. And as loud mouthed goofballs we just clicked as people. Being a part of the art scene at school meant having access to a special underground that the hipsters and jocks couldn’t even touch.
How would you define your genre? We call it protopunk. If you Google the term it’s the sound of the 60’s and 70’s that led to punk rock and that feels right. Musically, we’re somewhere between Johnny Cash and Stooges. As a drummer Tanya’s really likes Slim Jim Phantom but strips down those cymbal rhythms. As a guitar player I like the ferocity and drive of electric guitar but the danceability and twang of country. But everybody knows country gave birth to rock and roll. Vocally we’re grinding Tom Waits, Led Zeppelin and Kathleen Hanna into a thick puree. Tanya and I both sing on most tracks so there’s room for variety.
What’s your favorite Jersey City Hangout? For the rotating and various beer selection- Barcade. It makes me feel fancy. Tanya likes Subia’s because it’s an organic, all natural free-for-all. But if we’re looking to hang out somewhere for a few hours it’s 9th and Coles. They still have that neighborhood feel.
What can people look forward to at the 80’s Halloween Prom? We’ve been specifically asked to keep the show high energy, so we plan on doing exactly that. We have some covers in mind for the set but naturally we’ll be doing them our way. And if that’s not good enough just remember, an adult Halloween party is the American version of a Roman orgy. Short skirts, low cut tops, and people getting away with murder because you just don’t know who’s hiding under that mask.
And as always, remember kids: DIYGFY.
