Lyricism 101 is a class available at Boys & Girls Club of Hudson County that focuses on the elements of Hip Hop culture and music, while infusing literacy skills – the art of writing rhymes, poetry, and freestyling. The class has entered a national BGC contest where they had to submit an original rhyme about 1 of three topics.  These students really took it a step further by creating the melody with the guitar, writing a chorus and rhymes to the theme, “If I ruled the world, what changes would I make?”

Currently, the class is in the first round of the contest. The top four clubs with the most YouTube likes will advance to the next round where their video will be judged by music industry professionals.  They’re in second place, but still have a significant gap from first place and have a week left. With that being said, anything is possible and the class wants to maintain their top 4 status.
