A Rabbi and an Imam walk into City Hall….
I am not in Jersey City so I asked Crystal Davis my newest (and only) ChicpeaJC teammate/contributor/assistant/editor/life saver to cover the Iftaar Dinner at City Hall. This is not about religion, it’s really about how diverse Jersey City is. It is so lovely to see people from different backgrounds and religions coming together to celebrate an old Muslim Tradition…. and well there was also food involved.
Oh Hey! there is my friend Ahmed Shedeed The President of the Islamic Center in JC and also the brains behind Egypt Fest! And Rabbi Debra from Temple Beth El!! They are BFF’s by the way…. #GOSSIPJC
Crystal, where are my food pics yo?!
Ramadan in Jersey City
Last night was wonderful summer evening where many Muslims of the Jersey City community gathered at City Hall to celebrate Ramadan for an Ifaar Dinner. The dinner was presented by Mayor Steven Fulop and the Muslim Community of Jersey City.
The dinner began with speaking program that featured Imams and clergy from other faiths and places of worship in Jersey City. The program was then followed by a prayer and the breaking of the fast.
Despite the rushing clouds and passing showers, the event continued with prayers and readings from the Koran. The event signified the unity of religions in the city and was open to everybody and anybody who wanted to join the celebration.
Along the way, I ended up running into my high school Algebra teacher, Nabil Youssef. He teaches Mathematics at Lincoln High School and is a former City Council Candidate, and he also plays a huge role in the Muslim Community.
Once the prayers were complete families and friends began eating at 8:35PM and shared what they had even though they had fasted from sunrise to sunset.
I met this wonderful woman but neglected to get her name. She asked if I was a reporter and wanted to take a picture with me.
It was a beautiful night to be in the City Hall Plaza enjoying a meal with those who know you best.
Happy Ramadan!
