How do you get over 70 RSVPs on a Thursday night for a good cause? The answer is simple: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties.
What better way to kick-off 2016 other than with outstanding support, networks and good company that fundamentally believe in #MentoringMatters.
Friends, supporters and “Bigs” all joined to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Leadership Council Happy Hour in Hoboken on Thursday night. This volunteer-driven event is coordinated by BBBS’ “Leadership Council” – which is a group of committed Bigs who help further the agency’s mission throughout the community. The LC takes on community service, program development and fundraising efforts to support BBBS.
Continuing the spirit of National Mentoring Month which took place in January, Marty O’Briens donated 10% of all proceeds of the night to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties. BBBS is always looking for more mentors for the children in our communities. All it takes is four hours a month for one year to be a one-to-one “Big” to a child. BBBS will train you, support and supervise the relationship throughout the process. Bigs and Littles have fun together — and create memories that last a lifetime. They call it “Little moments … Big magic.” Research points to the powerful, positive, lasting impact Bigs have on children’s lives. Littles are:
-52% less likely to skip school
-46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
-More likely to get along with their families and peers
The next LC initiative will take place in late March/early April. Want to learn how you can impact a child’s life? Want to stay up-to-date on upcoming BBBS events? Follow them!
